At this time of year, everything seems to be "A Great Gift for Dad!"  Everything from ties to tools, from vitamins to vacations.  Dads tend to be practical people, and most are thrilled with any remembrance from their children.  If it plugs in and makes a lot of noise, all the better.

The idea for Father's Day came from a grateful daughter, Sonora Dodd of Washington, in 1909.  Her father, William Smart, had tragically lost his wife in childbirth -- giving birth to their sixth child.  Smart was left to care for and rear all six children alone on a rural farm.  He succeeded, and when his daughter grew up, she recognized what he'd sacrificed in the process.

At first, Father's Day was a local celebration in Spokane, WA, first held in 1910.  In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge got behind the idea of a national day, but it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation making the 3rd Sunday in June Father's Day.

Give our best to your father, and be sure to pass along our gift to him.

Father's Day seems to sneak up on us each year.  Mother's Day is a focal point, and we don't dare miss it.  And then we let down our guard and... BAM!  There's Father's Day right behind it.  Don't be caught unprepared this year.  We've got tips below for what to get Dad (and some ideas of things that probably would be best left alone!)

How many ties have you given to Dad for Father's Day over the years?  Probably at least a few.  But is that what Dad really wants?  (That's a rhetorical question.  You already know the answer!)

Unusual Gifts (to say the least)

If you think you've ever given Dad a wild gift, you haven't read the top ten outrageous gifts list.  The list is the result of a contest run by Hammacher Schlemmer, retailers of unusual gifts.  They asked their customers for the most unusual gifts they'd ever given, and gave out a hefty prize to the strangest entry.  Here are a few:

Grand Prize Winner:

  • A case of dynamite.  (Dad needed to get rid of a large tree stump.  The dynamite did the trick.  Of course, it also blew out all the windows in the house....)

Some of the Runners-Up:

  • "My father breeds and raises cattle and asks for essential items at times.  One year I bought him a cow castrator and he loved it."
  • "My son got me a pair of ladies' underwear.  He said they were really pretty and knew I would love wearing them.  He was 5.  (They were pretty, but they ended up going to my wife.)"
  • "When I was 9, I had no money for a gift, so I erased all the letters from a crossword puzzle book and gave it to my dad."

(Read more of the contest entries by clicking here.)

Ideas for GOOD gifts for Dad

Now that you know the worst gifts, you can surely do better than that!  Here are some ideas if you're still scratching your head:

  • Anything related to Dad's hobby -- whether it's golf, fitness, jigsaw puzzles, model airplanes, gardening, tinkering with cars, fishing, whatever.  Show that you know what he loves.
  • Tickets to sporting events, if he's a fan.  Get two tickets and go with him, to spend time together.
  • Gift certificates to favorite stores or online retailers -- and yes, that includes home improvement stores, clothing stores, auto accessories stores, even fancy car-wash places that charge an arm and a leg.  Let Dad treat himself.
  • Get Dad online!  If your father has a computer, but hasn't discovered the wonders of the internet, why not pay for a year of internet service?  That way you can keep in touch on a daily basis without it breaking the bank.
