It's the time of year when young (and old) men's fancy turns to their ladies, and when girls dream of floating down the aisle in a cloud of white satin.  It's amazing the amount of time, money and effort that is invested in this one day of our lives, but each generation seems determined to outdo the last.

To take some of the stress out of a wedding, we've accumulated some good links for getting organized, keeping your cool and preserving the memories afterwards.  My personal tip is that you assign one of your attendants to bring your gown to be professionally cleaned  after the wedding, while you are enjoying lounging on the beach in Cancun, or wherever your honeymoon takes you.

Best wishes for a lovely and memorable day.

Our Community Service Corner topic this week is Tissue and Organ Donation. Some might not see any connection between this organ donation and the joy and happiness of a wedding, but it is an appropriate topic as we are just completing National Donor Awarness week.

Please take a few minutes to review the links provided. This is a very important issue in you life and the life of others. My family and I learned how much organ donation can bring hope for survival from a desperate situation. Don't wait until it's too late to make this important decision.

Stress on Steroids!

That's how some people describe the activity leading up to a wedding day.  We invest so much emotional capital in this one day -- really a few hours of this one day -- that everything about it seems blown out of proportion.  You can have a lovely day, and not make yourself sick with stress over the details.  Careful planning, forcing yourself to relax, and maintaining a good sense of humor are all key ingredients to a wonderful wedding experience.

Before The Day

  • Shop around!  Not just for your gown, but for every service you will be needing.  Ask friends who married recently for good referrals.
  • Remember the hidden costs.  When you shop for a gown, be sure to budget the accessories (which can really add up) and alterations, before you settle on the dress of your dreams.
  • Read the labels in your gown.  If you plan to pass your gown on to your daughter some day, or a niece or sister or friend, it will need to be cleaned and preserved.  Buying a gown with a care label that indicates this is possible is the best way to ensure its longevity.
  • Keep it in perspective!  Yes, it's an important milestone, and a day to remember and treasure.  But it is, after all, a day.  And after The Day comes the ongoing joy of sharing your lives together.  Don't impoverish your future to pay for the launch.

On The Day

  • Bring a list of all relevant phone numbers with you to the wedding.  If something goes wrong or seems delayed, one of your attendants can deal with it for you.
  • Have an emergency kit of items, including asprin/pain reliever, needle and thread, extra pantyhose, nail polish and make-up.
  • Have someone help you dress, so that you avoid transferring make-up to your dress.  If you must touch up before the ceremony, put a towel around your shoulders to keep spots away.
  • Laugh a lot.  Something goes wrong at every wedding, and you'll probably be the only one who knows what didn't work exactly as planned.  Relax!  Enjoy the day and its significance.

Immediately After The Day

  • Leave your gown with one of your attendants so it can be brought in for cleaning and preserving.

There will be spills and stains on your dress (that's a given!) so let us know about any you are aware of.  Just because something (like champagne or white frosting) seems to dry "just fine", don't be fooled.  It's depositing sugar in the fabric, which will carmelize and turn brown over time.  It's imperative to get it out promptly.  If you spill on your gown, BLOT the spill, don't rub.  Let us do the rest.

Preservation of a wedding gown involves thorough hand inspection, gentle cleaning, hand finishing, and then packaging the dress and accessories in containers that are acid-neutral to prevent yellowing.  After we've done our part, you need to do yours -- store your gown in an area of your home that is not exposed to extremes of temperature and humidity (never the basement or attic!)  When it's ready to be worn by another bride, we'll happily press it and make it ready.

Featured Topic:  National Tissue and Organ Donation Awareness

It may seem like the farthest thing from your mind, but did you know you can give the gift of hope and life to dozens of people just by making a choice to be an organ and tissue donor some day?  There are three things you need to do to make your gift a reality:

1.  Educate yourself about the need for donation, and how to become a donor.  (See links below to get started.)

2.  Fill out a Donation Card and keep it in your wallet.

3.  Share your decision with family and relatives, since they will be the ones who will ultimately make this choice for you.
