Do
you know somebody who sits around reading
the dictionary for fun? It may not sound
particularly amusing, but you learn a lot
about the fluid language we speak with just
a quick glance. (If you don't believe
me, check out the definitions at right.)
As you enjoy a day
off for Labor Day on September 2, we don't
expect you'll be thumbing through the dictionary.
But you may be
online, so we've given you some interesting
resources to check out -- from
the history of Labor Day to how to
find out if you're getting paid what others
in your profession are paid, to
getting ready for that other labor...
the one that leads to a new tax deduction
in the family.
We'll be back at
it bright and early on the 3rd, and we hope
to see you soon!

Labor
Today
As long as there
have been people, there's been labor.
If you want to eat, you have to work, the
saying goes. Today, of course, there
are lots of regulations guaranteeing safe
workplaces, and helping people find the jobs
they need. Here are some links you might
find interesting:
- Department
of Labor -- charged with issues
relating to workplace safety and health,
pensions and benefit plans, employment,
and other issues.
- Bureau
of Labor and Statistics -- This
is the principal fact-finding agency for
the Federal Government in the broad field
of labor economics and statistics.
Find out how your paycheck compares to others
in your profession.
- Labor
and Employment Law -- if you
can think of it, there's probably a law
to cover it. Lots of links and resources.
- US
Department of Labor, Projects for People
with Disabilities -- tips on
jobs, training and resumes; also jobs accommodation
resources and employment initiatives.
- Labor
Quotes -- a good quote can make
your whole day. For example:
"You can only protect your liberties
in this world by protecting the other man's
freedom. You can only be free if I
am free." -- Clarence Darrow.

The
OTHER Kind of Labor
It takes work to
carry a child for 9 months and then give birth.
But despite that, people have been having
children for thousands of years. If
you're in the "family way" you'll find interesting
features on these sites:
- Labor
of Love -- Features include birth
stories, online magazine, discussion boards,
birth announcements, email postcards, penpal
database, baby name finder, due date calendar
and more.
- Labor
and Birth Resources -- A site
packed with information, including articles
about the various birthing options, pain
control and much more.
