What
are you getting Mom this year???
When you were a child,
there was no difficulty in figuring out what
to do for Mom for Mother's Day. You
made her something out of glue and bright
paper and maybe some plaster of paris or clay.
Now you shudder to think what you gave her,
but she treasured it all the same. It
was something YOU made -- and that was all
that mattered.
But now you're older,
and you have a much better appreciation of
what Mom did for you when you were growing
up. You don't want to give her something
semi-identifiable to put on the refrigerator!
So, where do you go for ideas this time?
History
of Mother's Day
Click
here to read about how Mother's Day got started.
If you think it's become too commercialized,
you're not alone. Even the woman who
is credited with bringing about the official
observance of Mother's Day in the United States
felt the same way in 1948 -- and we've embellished
it since then!
What
to get for Mom
Let's make it easier,
and give you a few hints about what Moms say
they DON'T want!
Worst
gifts ever, according to U.S. Moms, were:
- Kitchen appliances,
garden tools and cleaning supplies
- Dead or poorly
arranged flowers
- Forgetting Mother's
Day altogether!
Most moms are happy
that those they love remember them on this
special day -- and how you remember isn't
as important as that you do. So, even
though you've grown up, some things haven't
changed.
Best
gifts ever:
- Jewelry
- Home and school-made
cards and gifts
- Help with chores,
or a day of rest
- Quality family
time
- Dinner out, and/or
breakfast in bed
- Flowers
- A trip
- Spa visits and
beauty products
Picking
a gift for your Mom:
What mom treasures
most is knowing that you really thought about
her and what she'd like. Moms are like
everyone else -- they like to open presents.
So put a little extra effort into that wrapping
(no newspaper comic sections, please!) and
focus on Mom as a person, not a job description.
- Ask
her what she'd like! Often,
she'll tell you what she could really use/enjoy.
- Give her the
gift of your time and presence.
- Make
the gift personal -- you're
one of the few people who can truly give
her intimate gifts from the heart.
- Look at the colors
she wears for clues when
making purchases.
- Is
she collecting something special?
Augment her collection, or give her something
to help her display it.
- Does
she have an upcoming event?
Maybe she could use something to make it
even more enjoyable and special.
- Moms love items
with birthstones
of their children and grandchildren.
- What
are her hobbies? Sewing?
Movies? Travel?
- A
photo of you and her together
is always special. Put it in a frame
that will show it off and remind her of
you.
- Give a
gift that pampers Mom as
a woman.
In other words, be
creative, be sensitive, and you'll be successful
this Mother's Day making Mom fee special and
loved.
