'Tis the season of the Popeel Pocket Fisherman and barbecue grills and golf accessories and (most important!) power tools!  In other words, it's Father's Day.  Of course, at this time of year, somehow everything becomes "a great gift for Dad" -- from avocado pitters to aluminum siding.

While we can't help you decide what to get for Dad this year, we wanted to help you remember why Dad is so important.  Through the years, he gave YOU some incredible gifts, and we've made an effort to list just a dozen of them here.  For some of us, someone other than Dad stepped in to serve in that role, and they are no less to be honored for their part in forming your character and self-image.

Thanks, Dads, for all you do to make our next generation better. We love you for it, and hope to see you soon.

Every dad views the world differently as soon as his child arrives.  Suddenly, it's a place of boundess possibilities, and also incredible dangers.  A good father blends his desire to prepare his children for the realities of life with efforts to make his sons and daughters people who sparkle and light the way for others.

You may be a new dad trying to find your way through the minefield, a more seasoned father, or a grandfather. You may also be none of those things -- just a grown child looking back at YOUR father and how you were raised at this time of year when we traditionally salute dads.  In any case, here are some thought-provoking quotes and ideas for special "gifts" fathers can give their children, and which children can be grateful for receiving from their fathers as they were growing up.

A Dozen Great Gifts FROM Dad

Gift #1 -- Love.

Love is not a hug, or a warm feeling. It's a commitment to put the person you love ahead of things that don't matter as much -- giving them priority in your life.  Children are incredibly sensitive to the place they hold in their father's hierarchy of priorities.

"No one dies wishing he'd spent more time at the office." -- Unknown Source.

Gift #2 -- Respect.

Our civilization has become one of disrespect for others. Yet being respectful is one of the fastest ways for a child to receive respect from others. A parent who helps a child to develop the ability to see the good qualities in others and take them seriously has given a lifelong gift.

"Oh, to be only half as wonderful as my child thought I was when he was small, and only half as stupid as my teenager now thinks I am." -- Rebecca Richards

Gift #3 -- Honesty.

Somebody once said telling the truth was easier than lying because that way you don't have to remember who you told what to.  Honesty is more than telling the truth, of course, but setting an example of honesty -- in little things and big -- shows a child that it is not only possible to be honest, but something to be admired.

"Always do right -- this will gratify some and astonish the rest." -- Mark Twain

Gift #4 -- A sense of humor.

Let's face it: life is funny! The people who seem most unhappy are those who not only can't laugh at life, they have never seen the humor in their own thrashings around within it.  A healthy sense of humor can smooth the way through many sticky situations, and marks a person as both intelligent and pleasant. What a gift!

"A doctor can bury his mistakes, but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines." -- Frank Lloyd Wright (who obviously didn't always take his profession with the utmost seriousness.)

Gift #5 -- Integrity.

Your good name and how you carry it is like a sign post to your children in how to live and be.  It takes a lifetime of choosing integrity over the easy way out to build a reputation, but only one bad choice to cast doubt on all the substance of the man behind it.  Teaching your children how to value their own name and reputation will invest them with self-respect.

"Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow.  The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." -- Abraham Lincoln.

"Many a man's reputation would not know his character if they met on the street." -- Elbert Hubbard.

Gift #6 -- Wisdom.

Who's the wisest person you know? How wise did you think your father was when you were growing up? Often the people closest to us, who have a lifetime of experience to impart, are the last people we'll believe when they say wise things. But that's no reason to stop trying to impart wisdom. Your child may not listen, may not appear to hear, but somewhere down the road it will come back to him, or it will pull her out of a jam, and your efforts will pay off.

"Write down the advice of him who loves you, though you like it not at present." -- English Proverb.

Gift #7 -- Faith.

It doesn't matter what faith you were raised in -- or if you were raised in a religious environment at all.  Your job as a parent is to make it feasible for your children to explore their own faith, to come to terms with this most intimate and important part of their lives.  Sharing your own faith with your children can be the most meaningful bond in your lives, and one that will outlive all the struggles of youth.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." -- Hebrews 11:1.

Gift #8 -- All they need... but much less than what they want.

In a child's vocabulary, need and want are the same word.  You, of course, know better.  It's so easy to get sucked into the trap of thinking you can only keep a child's love if his wants are met.   Once the line has been drawn so that wants are relegated to earned privileges or special treats, a child is free to enjoy what is at hand, instead of always pining for what is around the corner and out of reach.

"The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet."
-- James Oppenheim.

Gift #9 -- Discipline.

It's been fashionable for years to give up simple discipline and instead to negotiate with children.  There's just one problem with that -- you're supposed to be the adult.  Children don't negotiate, they manipulate.  It's up to the parent, as the current spate of anti-drug commercials say, to be the adult and to lay down the rules.    The other aspect of discipline is helping a child learn to stick to a job until it's done well.  Nobody will coddle him on his first job, or pick up the slack when she can't sustain an effort in college.  Do them a favor -- teach them both sides of discipline.

"Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired." -- Jules Renard.

Gift #10 -- Work Ethic.

This nation was founded by people who took work seriously.  Their commitment to building their own future resulted in the industrial and international power that is called the United States.  Some people say that "Generation X" doesn't have a work ethic.  In reality, they just work differently.  They're used to a faster-paced experience, and what some call short attention span, others call multi-tasking.  Dads today may have to adjust their way of teaching work ethic, but it's a lesson that will make their kids stand-outs in the working world.

"Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all." -- Sam Ewing.

"I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have." -- Thomas Jefferson.

Gift #11 -- Life Skills.

Some parents help to teach their children the value of money by cashing out their entire paycheck one month and receiving it in small bills.  Then they sit down with the children and together they make piles for each of the bills that are due.  Seeing the big pile dwindle to much less by the end of the month's bills brings home a valuable lesson to children struggling to understand why they can't do everything they want to do.  There are lots of creative ways to teach children basic skills like money accountability, punctuality, proper grooming for an occasion, and dealing with people.  Use every opportunity to teach, and the lesson will be memorable.

"I'm living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart."
-- e.e. cummings.

Gift #12 -- Fun!

Life is a serious thing, and imparting all the various skills, examples and character traits to children that they will need when they are grown can become so serious it squeezes out all the fun.  But when you think of your own childhood, what do you remember?  You think of the family holidays. The camping trips. The new puppy Dad surprised you with on your tenth birthday.  Learning to fish, with the whole day ahead of you to enjoy it.  As important as building character is building a rich repository of good memories, family traditions, and smile-inducing reminiscences.

"Cherish all your happy moments: they make a fine cushion for old age."
-- Christopher Morley.
